I have been able to engage in two learning management systems throughout my time at universtiy, including Blackboard and Moodle. I know that without Blackboard and Moodle, particularly during my first year, I would have been a mess. I loved the comfort of knowing that everything I needed for each course was right there in one place, ready for me to access whenever I needed it. Both these learning management systems are presented in an organised, easy to operate system and suit my visual learning style perfectly.
To utilise such learning managment systems in a classroom would be quite beneficial, not only for the students, but also for the parents and the teacher. Within the learning management system the teacher can upload:
- content
- interactive activities
- blogs
- discussion forums
- assessment requirements
A learning management system is content driven tool that allows it users to access resources, assessment requirements, and engage in online collaboartion with other users. It would allow the teacher to communicate with the parents on a technological level, making it more convienient for some parents to become involved with their child's learning.

Hi Hannah,
ReplyDeleteWhen I first glanced at your blog and saw Learning Management Systems I had no idea what you were talking about - however, I use one weekly :) I was wondering - is a virtual classroom a LMS? I would really like to set one up for my future class, for the reasons you mentioned - also I think doing homework via a computer game like Spelling City is much more engaging than writing out your spelling words three times. Also, do you know if LMSs are free? I heard that someone said the Blackboard is a very expensive program but that moodle is free. I don't know if that's true or not, but I really want to find out how to make a virtual classroom.
Also, I really love your idea for having it as a communication tool for parents to use.
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI was much the same as you - I had no idea what a LMS was, it sounded so technical!
Thanks for your comment. Your question definitely got me thinking... :)
- I believe that a virtual classrooom would be classed as some sort of Learning Management System as it would have much similar features to systems such as Moodle and Blackboard. We may have to do some researching into this...
- I would assume that most good LMSs would be free. It would be interesting to see if Blackboard and Moodle are free or like you said, quite expensive.
I love the idea of a virtual classroom also. I think they are so benefical to use for all year levels for many, many reasons especially to further engage the learner and their parents.
Thanks for you insights Sarah :)
